Anna Witte's mixed media paintings have been attracting a lot of praise and gawking inside the coffee shop. It's hard to pinpoint all the sources of inspiration for these all-at-once African and medieval-inspired paintings. They look sort of like mythology from King Arthur's Court meets "Where the Wild Things Are."
"Themes that I draw from are story telling and performance: circus, dance and music," says Witte, who grew up in Germany and Spain. She also illustrates children's books. Visit her Web site at www.annawitte.com, and come in to see a great array of gorgeous paintings for purchase.
Look at this giant tower of iciness. That's a whole buncha cool, ice-crunchy goodness below that spaceship-like orb that is its plastic cup top. It's coolness all the way around.
The drink shown is our mocha freeze, but this favorite is now available in a new, young, updated version without wrinkles--vanilla malt freeze! That's right, kids (or adults), you get the taste of vanilla and candy-sweet malt, whipped to oblivion so it slides down your throat. You don't even have to swallow!
We're not just the best Broad Ripple cafe or coffee shop, we're the best malt shack in the neighborhood, too!
One of our regular customers, Shane (A.K.A. "White Chocolate"), models a lovely new tie-dye Monon Coffee Co. shirt. These shirts are seriously stylin', and come in all different kinds of colors and fits. Shane's looks like it was dipped in a mocha, making him look scrumptious.
Weather Willy says it's hotter than Hades outside. Better come to the Monon Coffee Company for Broad Ripple's best iced mochas, fresh fruit smoothies and bluemonade in the city!
Some to try: *Berry Blaster with raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, cherry and blackberry *House smoothie with strawberry and banana *Malted Monkey with chocolate, banana, malt and milk *Peachy Keen, sweet tea with peach *Bluemonade, blueberry rooibos tea and lemonade
Come in for a coffee, leave with your future spouse. That's what happened with our adorable little Monon-spawned couple, the future Mr. And Mrs. Dan and Jamie Fahrner.
Okay okay, they met at a party held or co-thrown or something by some Monon Coffee Company regulars and/or employees, so it's almost the same thing as them having met here. And they've both been long-time, beloved baristas at our shop. The point is, we love these crazy kids! Here's to a long and love-filled life.
In case you can't hear Weather Willy due to all the noisy wind, he's saying today might be your last chance for sun. There's a chance of rain all the rest of the week!
On the bright side, doesn't this graffiti make him look young(er)?
Monon Coffee Company is one of the most vegan-friendly eateries in Broad Ripple. Plenty of our treats can be had by those who don’t care to eat animal products of any kind.
Like our awesome vegan carrot cake. Think it’s easy to make a carrot cake vegan? Not when it’s this good. The bakers don’t use real butter or eggs in this recipe at all, from the flakey, carrots-and-spice dotted cake to the fluffy white icing that covers it.
Vegan carrot cake pairs well with any of our vegan drink selections. You can do any of our milk-based drinks--lattes, freezes, mochas--with healthy almond, rice, soy or hemp milk. And our smoothies are always made with frozen fruit and apple juice, so they're literally a vegan's dream.
We're how eating healthy and cruelty free ve-GAN in Broad Ripple!
Above our case with the tasty sandwiches and flakey croissants, under our popular salt and pepper kettle chips, lie our bagels. But not just any bagels. Bagel Fair bagels—the best in Indy.
Bagel Fair ‘gels hail from a small shop on 86th street. No, it doesn’t have all the “schmears” and hoopla of Einstein Bros., but then, those guys can’t hold a candle to the texture of these center-less bread circles. They’re crisp on the outside, chewy and soft in the middle, and have just enough bounce in between.
Try the cinnamon raisin flavor slathered with peanut butter, a personal favorite of William. Or the everything bagel with cream cheese.
PS--Did you know that bagels are vegan? Yep. They're made with all dry ingredients. So come and get 'em, animal lovers!
While scouring the universe of Broad Ripple for bits of weather, Weather Willy, owner of Indianapolis's best coffee shop and weatherman extraordinaire, came across a new and wondrous store: Addendum. Not to be confused with its predecessor, Ginko, Addendum has usable art for the home from artists across America. Owner Shane says that when the cast of Wicked was in town, they each picked up a candle from his store.
Speaking of candles, they're getting some new ones in from the oldest candlemakers in the world. that decked out the palace of Versailles. And to prove it, they have a candle that smells like its wooden floors. You won't find that piece of history anywhere else in Indiana.
What the heck is Bluemonade, and why would we do that? Because we wanted to take something uberhealthy and delicious and mix it with something ubertasty and refreshing.
Barista Kaiton can be credited with this crazy concotion, but one of our regulars, Sandi, can be credited with its moniker. Bear with us--it has taken a while to nail down the spelling. (Bloominade? Bluemaide ? Bluemanade? ... Bluemonade!)
One thing is for sure--this sweet, cool, tangy drink has summer written all over it. Come and see for yourself.
Weather Willy gives you the forecast for our rainy week (it'll get better!) outside of today's Broad Ripple sponsor, Boogie Burger. Plus, Willy teases this weekend's 80-acre Woodruff Place flea market.
We also have a new healthy, refreshing drink--Blueminade. It's our tasty, tart lemonade mixed with antioxidant-rich blueberry rooibos. Come in out of the rain and try one.
Plus, become a fan on our Facebook page, where we'll update you on all the latest offerings and goings-on. We're currently looking for input on the soap opera we'll start to do weekly, so if you're a regular and have an idea, post on our wall!
Choo Choo Brew This intense-yet-smooth blend with chocolate and nutty overtones is the Switzerland of coffee: nobody dislikes it! This blend of Celebes Kalossi, Guatemala and Ethiopian Moka is used to make our iced coffees, but, of course, you can also enjoy it hot. Come by and try some.
And if you're wondering about the name ... it's after the Monon Trail train tracks!
Weather Willy and his guest Danica Patrick tell you what to expect for race weekend weather. Danica looks a little ... different. She's a dude magnent. Or is it William in those shorts?
Wondering if you'll be shakin' in your skivvies this Broad Ripple Art Fair weekend? Fear not. The best coffee shop in the 'Village has the scoop on when it will rain or shine--and it certainly will shine.
Sometimes you don't want to stroll around Broad Ripple with a hot coffee in the beautiful springtime. But you probably wouldn't mind some fruity, icy goodness. Enter the best Broad Ripple smoothies that money can buy, made of all-natural ingredients like strawberries, papaya, banana, peach and more. You can also add protein powder, echinacea, ginseng or ginger.
Drummer Dan might even play for you, or at least let you watch him make your smoothie. It's almost like a killer drum solo. In your mouth.
While I do miss Indianapolis Best Coffee (I forgot to bring my favorite in my rush to leave town!) this is a beautiful place. Nestled between the Mission and Salish Mountains, in the high Flathead Valley, this is one of my favorite places in the world.
The Flathead Valley is home to the Federated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, a large and influential Native Tribe, with a strong Tribal Council, whose tribal lands make up nearly 50% of the area. It is no wonder that this tribe settled here where a strong, spiritual connection to the land and big sky are rewarded with the daily beauty and wonders surrounding us.
I highly recommend a visit to this area which includes Flathead Lake, one of the largest natural lakes west of the Mississippi (11 miles wide and 27 miles long) fed by glacial streams coming directly from Glacier National Park, another spectacular place. Get here soon because the glaciers, once numerous, are dwindling with just over 100 left. Don't plan on swimming until late summer as the water is cold.
Yes, Weather Willy is in sunny, beautiful Montana. And he's rubbing it in:
"Record highs here in the high northern Rockies. 80 degrees today and the sun has been out for days.
"The mountains are beautifully capped with snow all around us, although it's starting to melt from the warmth. Looks like tomorrow here will be 70, mostly sunny with a good 10 to 20 mph wind coming on. Thursday it will be more seasonal with highs in the mid 50's and lows at night around 30.
