Duncan Alney's "In Person" Exhibit

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 by Jennifer Litz
Duncan Alney’s “In Person” series of black and white photos captures archetypes of the creative class. From Indy’s resident Cajun cool cat, Yats proprietor and nicest-guy-you-met Joe Vuskovich, to punk-rock sweetie Lindsay Manfredi, Alney’s mostly musical shakers jump off their black and white backings with loads of character.

Alney is president of Firebelly Marketing in Broad Ripple, which offers creative online and offline marketing solutions to Indianapolis clients and beyond. He came to the United States with a few dollars in his pocket, and worked hard to carve out his creative niche. He’s succeeded. And this work in particular reflects the American dream in which he and his subjects partake.

Deborah Winchester's South American Graffiti on Display at Monon Coffee Company

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 by Jennifer Litz
Deborah Winchester is a fine art and nature photographer based in Indianapolis. Her work has appeared in everything from Cowboys & Indians magazine to the Indianapolis Star.  Her current works on display in Indianapolis coffee shop Monon Coffee company, however, take an urban turn, depicting graffiti culture in South America.

Winchester recently visited Valparaiso, Chile. The photographer was taken aback by the locals’ acceptance of their proficient graffiti culture. “People actually pay people to decorate garage doors with this stuff,” she says. “It’s a whole different approach.”

Her explosively colorful pictures capture it: One depicts a building clad with a giant, expertly rendered hand throwing paper planes. In another picture, a grinning blonde lady in a Stetson breathes what looks like a poker to the neck of the Asian lady who sits in front of her, exhaling a swirling motif that beautifies a wall’s caged window.

Come by the coffee shop to see Winchester's nine photographs from the Valparaiso trip. They are all matted and framed (16 by 20), and go for around $250. The artist will negotiate on other sizes or frames requested.

While I do miss Indianapolis Best Coffee (I forgot to bring my favorite in my rush to leave town!) this is a beautiful place.  Nestled between the Mission and Salish Mountains, in the high Flathead Valley, this is one of my favorite places in the world.

The Flathead Valley is home to the Federated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, a large and influential Native Tribe, with a strong Tribal Council, whose tribal lands make up nearly 50% of the area.  It is no wonder that this tribe settled here where a strong, spiritual connection to the land and big sky are rewarded with the daily beauty and wonders surrounding us.

I highly recommend a visit to this area which includes Flathead Lake, one of the largest natural lakes west of the Mississippi (11 miles wide and 27 miles long) fed by glacial streams coming directly from Glacier National Park, another spectacular place.  Get here soon because the glaciers, once numerous, are dwindling with just over 100 left.  Don't plan on swimming until late summer as the water is cold.

Hope to run into you here sometime

See you soon!

Speaking Jersey with Carly Cooke

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 by William Powell

Travel season came early to this Indianapolis coffee shop. In fact, our surrounding Monon Trail is known for its interesting people and renowned bikers,  hitchhikers and world travelers. Our own barista Carly Cooke is in fact from a far-flung land called Joysey (Jersey). She shares some of her native tongue with us here.

Best Tea Selection in Indy

Friday, March 27, 2009 by William Powell

Monon Coffee has some of the best coffee drinks, fresh juices and locally made baked goods around. But did you know about our stellar tea selection?

Matt Shoal, a Monon Coffee Company regular, knows tea. The world-traveling wilderness training expert says MCC has the best tea selection of any Monon Trail cafe, and even in the states. Here he talks about some of his favorite blends, and demystifies the white tea buzz.

If spinach made Popeye what he is, could tea make you beefy like Matt? It's worth a a try!

On Monon Coffee Company’s Twelfth Anniversary, A Brief History

Wednesday, March 18, 2009 by William Powell
Horror stories about locally owned shops closing flourish in this economy.  So Monon Coffee Company employees in Broad Ripple Village will celebrate extra hard on the shop’s twelfth birthday this Saturday, March 21.

Before Starbucks perched on 62nd Street, MCC was the original Monon Trail cafe. Twelve years later, its walls are the same seafoam green, and two of the original baristas, Leslie and Tatiana, serve the foam-leaf topped lattes they perfected long ago.

One of the original owners, Kathy Williams, had interviewed with Hubbard and Cravens and co-ran Cornerstone Coffee House for its owner, who lived faraway in Portland, Oregon. Then she and a partner decided to open their own shop in the heart of Broad Ripple Village. Williams and her husband literally built the shop from the ground-up.“It went gangbusters,” she says.

Williams was ahead of the curve in terms of her drink menu’s integrity and ingenuity.  MCC offered fresh juicing and wheatgrass shots before anyone else in the area. But their practice of mixing two microroasted beans really differentiated their brand.

MCC's Atlanta microroaster was of Jamaican background and leaned toward European-style smoothness. He thought the "burnt French roast" taste popularized at Starbucks was a bitter bastardization of coffee’s destiny. But Williams couldn’t deny the direction of American palates. So she incorporated a more traditional American microroaster out of Wisconsin, and experimented to find a golden ratio between the two beans.

Current managing-owner William Powell saved the coffee shop from purgatory six years ago when Williams and their partners decided to switch fields. Powell ushered in the next generation of artists, students and self-employed regulars and preserved the original, top-secret (heretofore)  bean blend that separates MCC's espresso and coffee from the bitter status quo.

Long live locally owned Indianapolis coffee shops!

Monon Iced Cappucino Wins Best in America and New Zealand

Thursday, March 12, 2009 by William Powell
At least, according to our globetrotting regulars Michelle and Kathy. The two swing by the Monon Coffee Co. every morning for an iced cappuccino with extra foam. Both have participated in coffee “taste tests” on coasts in America and beyond, and both are in agreement: Nothing comes close to the icy, foamy goodness back home at 920 East Westfield in Indianapolis.

For the high praise from such discerning tasters, we offer our humble thanks. And an observation: We hear the same about our white chocolate mochas.

Weather Willy Wednesdays!

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 by William Powell
Have you ever noticed how the weathermen can be completely OFF in their predictions here in Indianapolis? Some days, you’d have better luck pulling up the moving radar map and guesstimating when a storm will roll in, out, or around the Monon Trail.  That’s exactly what coffee shop owner William does here for his guests, and if you haven’t benefited from his sage predictions yet, you will!

Every Tuesday mid-morning, William will make his weather predictions for the day. If he isn’t correct within 7 degrees and general conditions, patrons will enjoy a free "after-work" drip coffee on a designated day of the month.  We will check our predictions against Weather.com’s the next day and pronounce the winner.

Stop by Tuesday morning to see William broadcast from his own Broad Ripple cafe headquarters.  Sway his predictions! If you miss him, look for the video Wednesday.

Organic Fair Trade Guatemala

This coffee comes from the Asobagri Cooperative founded in 1989 and is in the Guatemala's Huehuetenango region. The co-op has over 600 active members, most of whom are coffee farmers. The co-op is committed to sustainable farming practices. One member notes, "We implement a number of different organic techniques, including weeding four times a year, building natural barriers and terraces and using organic fertilizers. It's notable that Asobagri Cooperative reinvests profits through farmer education and crop diversification. IN fact, Many of the coffee growers are now inter-cropping with banana and citrus trees to insure alternate sources of income. This crop of Organic Fair Trade Guatemala is clean and well-rounded with an exciting aroma. Our roaster's signature full city roast enhances the coffee's inherent soft smoky flavors. Your palate will detect a peppery, spicy twist and bittersweet chocolate and black cherry flavor notes.

Kenya AA

Located near Thika in the central highlands of Kenya, Miricho Estate produces a full-bodied coffee with good aroma and the distinctive winey aftertaste that Kenya coffee is noted for.

Costa Rica Tarrazu

This fine coffee has good body and aroma.  Grown on steep hillsides overlooking the Tarrazu River, it is tended with loving and expert care through all stages of cultivation and processing.

Decaf Brazil Santos

This Swiss Water Processed Decaf is of particular interest having been know in the trade as one of the best growths for over a hundred years. The coffee takes its name from the port of Santos, through which the coffee is shipped, and Bourbon is a variety of coffee arabica brought to Brazil from the Indian Ocean island of Bourbon.

Fazenda Pindaibas is located at an elevation of 3,000 feet near the town of Piumhi in the southeastern region of Minas Gerais. The fazenda is owned by the Baggio family who celebrate their 125th coffee harvest in Brazil this year (2007). Ten hectares of Fazenda Pindaibas were set aside by the current owner, Jose Astor Baggio, and dedicated to the production of a high quality Bourbon coffee. Because uniform maturity of the coffee cherries is essential to produce the best flavor, the coffee is hand picked with special care by dedicated and experienced workers. The coffee is naturally processed using traditional methods. The Baggio family combine the latest technology with years of experience to produce this quality coffee which has a limited production of only 1,500 pounds.

ENJOY!

About our Rwanda Coffee:

Wow. This cup shows just how much influence our gifted artisan roasters wield over each batch. Our roasters wanted to showcase the fruit and brightness in this crop from Bufcafe Cooperative and they hit the jackpot with a light roast yielding an exceptionally bright cup and sweet mild body. See if you can taste the mango and citrus notes! Our roaster has a rich relationship with the growers of Bufcafe and we’re happy to note that new crop Bufcafe won honors at Cup of Excellence and earned top RoastMaster honors at the Specialty Coffee Association conference this year. Cafe Rwanda is a program designed to practically support coffee-farming families in Rwanda. Our roaster donates $1 for every pound of Rwandan coffee we buy. The dollars are earmarked for the Coffee Lifeline Project to purchase solar-powered radios and programming. Thanks to the radios, coffee families now have access to weather and agricultural news, educational programming for children, medical information and even entertainment.
